Knowing how to fix lower back pain can give you a whole new lease on life. Pain the lower back area can be crippling and if you are a person who suffers from this condition constantly then I’m sure you are desperate for answers – I know, because I’ve been there myself.

Muscle spasms have been one of the most common causes of lower back pain. Though the medical world is still not sure what exactly causes spasms, but as per the recent research and studies, some of the possible factors that may lead to muscle spasms include stretching too much, carrying a heavy object improperly, and mental stress. Back spasms are usually more common in those who live sedentary lifestyles.

Get an accurate diagnosis from your chiropractor, family Dr. or a physical therapist. More often than not back pain is probably from a muscle strain and muscle spasms. Doing all this activities listed above in Tip number one cause your back muscles to be overly stressed and strained. The end result is you having really bad pain. However, if the symptom does not go away in a few days you should definitely consult a healthcare provider to determine if your condition is being caused by something more than a muscle strain and muscle spasm.

          ]]>

These simple exercises can be done almost anywhere and will provide immediate relief of back pain associated with poor posture. If you have ever felt the need to stand and arch your back after sitting for an extended period of time, then you understand the concept. The pain in your back is from too much flexion (slouching), so exercises that move it in the opposite direction (extension exercises) are most helpful.

Back pain is either acute, appearing quickly and intensely after an accident or injury and lasting only a short while, or chronic, recurrent pain that can come seemingly out of nowhere. The direct causes of chronic back pain are rarely obvious – simple movements, arthritis, bad posture, obesity, and internal disorders can all cause our backs to ache.

If you suffer from lower back pain and you can handle it with some sort of spray or balm freely available in the market it is ok. However, when the back pain just does not go away completely and lingers on for a couple of months it is best to get yourself to the doctor to try and determine the cause f the pain. In most cases the cause of the lower back pain will be some prescription drug that been prescribed to you and you have been taking it over a period of time. Many drugs are known to cause lower back pain if taken over an extended period of time

Question by a6385u: Back problems..caused by large chest?
When I stand for long periods of time or do alot of strenuous upper body exercise, I get a pain on my left shoulderblade. I can pinpoint the exact spot where it hurts. If you move one inch to the right or left, there is no pain. My mother, who is an LPN, says that it may be a herniated disc in my upper back, which is sending pain to that spot. She has a similar situation with “exact spot pain” caused by a herniated disc in her lower back. She says that it may or may not be caused by the fact that I have rather large breasts, which put extra weight on my back. What is your opinion or advice about my situation?

Best answer:

Answer by D.S.M
Your moms more than likely right, your big boobs may really be a problem also.

Back pain disorder is prevalent. Based on American surveys, it is one of the most common excuses for not reporting for work. Based on the rate of its prevalence, survey results also showed that the American population alone spends as much as billion every year for different remedies for lower back pain.

Medical experts believe that there is not perfect solution in treating lumbar disorders. Experts in the medical community also conduct clinical tests regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of other treatments, and unfortunately several remedies for lower back pain were found to be wanting in conclusive evidence to support claims that they are beneficial.

For this purpose, a list of remedies for lower back pain faulted or negated by medical experts as having no beneficial results in treating the back problems, is provided below:

1. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or TENS

A doctor from the University of Washington published a report in the New England Journal of Medicine that TENS does nothing to really treat lower back pains except provide placebo effect. This was proven among 145 clinically tested patients who were divided into groups that would use either genuine or fake TENS machine.

          ]]>

Clinical conclusion shows that all 145 patients claimed to feel better after the treatment and all of them claimed there were improvements. By the end of the 2nd month, all 145 patients reported the recurrence of their back pains.

2. Spinal Manipulation Therapy (SMT)

Similar studies were also made by two universities in two separate occasions, conducted by two different sets of medical experts. They arrived at the same conclusion that the effects of Spinal Manipulation Therapy are no better that the relief derived from acetaminophens.

3. Back Belts or Lumbar Back Support

As more employers required the use of back belts from their workers, investigators from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health disclosed in their findings that back belts had no conclusive evidence in preventing low back pain.

In another study conducted at the Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, their conclusion about back belts as one of the remedies for lower back pain has no direct effect for the treatment of any one cause of lumbar disorder. The belt merely provided comfort as it braces the lower back area.

4. Magnet Therapies

Researchers from a group known as Focus in Alternative and Complementary Therapies reviewed results of clinical studies about the effect of magnet therapies. The overall results showed that this particular therapy showed no significant improvement in the conditions of the patients tested, except for some pain relief in knee osteoarthritis present in some of the patients. Hence, claims that magnet therapies are effective remedies for lower back pain were negated.

5. Percutaneous Intradiscal Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation (PIRFT)

This technique involved inserting a needle directly to the affected disc and will apply radiofrequency to produce heat inside the disc. Accordingly, the heat build up inside will stop the disc nerves from sending out pain messages to the brain. A group of doctors conducted a new research and clinical study and have published their findings in a book.

Remedies for lower back pain abound yet not all of them are proven effective, based on the information gathered above. Thus, it is always best for a patient to conduct his own research or consult his physician, in order to avoid unnecessary treatments that have no full medical support.

Pain is incredibly debilitating. It takes over your whole life.

But back pain seems to be the worst, especially lower back pain. Perhaps that’s because your back supports you in everything you do, so pain there permeates everywhere.

Whatever the reason, you need to do something to manage life on a day to day basis.

Analgaesics and pain killers may (or may not) help with the pain, but they don’t do your liver a lot of good.

So what are the alternatives?

Surgery sounds risky and expensive.

Let’s look at what you’re not being told. Put your belief system on hold for a moment, while you explore a possibility.

One of the symptoms that occur for a lot of back pain sufferers is the pain on the slightest movement. Lying down in bed, absolutely motionless, provides the most relief.

Lying on your back, and so putting pressure on it, also affords you some relief.

          ]]>

But you can’t live like that.

The origin of your pain may have been over straining your back, or even an injury.

But one thing for sure is that the pain makes you irritable, if not down right angry.

This is not uncommon. Pain tends to shorten your fuse. But you find your family avoid you like the plague, which is just as you want it.

If any of this seems to fit what you have, then you’re in luck.

As I say, suspend your belief system. If you get relief, who cares where it comes from, as long as it was ethically obtained?

The homeopathic remedy Bryonia has an affinity with any pain which is much worse for the slightest movement of the offending part. Lower back pain seems to fit it to a T, although any back pain, with the same symptoms, is likely to get relief.

So, to recap, for Bryonia to be suitable for your lower back pain, you need to have the following symptoms:
pain which is much worse for any movement the pain is better while motionless the pain is easier with pressure applied the pain makes you irritable, even angry

Another, less important symptom for Bryonia to work for your lower back pain, is that you don’t like heat on it, the pain is better with cold applied, rather than heat.

Homoeopathic remedies can be obtained from most health shops, many pharmacies, practicing homeopaths and homeopathic pharmacies.

Depending on how long you have had your lower back pain will determine how long you need to take the remedy. But you should see an improvement with only a few doses. That will guide you.

It is possible, that this remedy will go a long way to resolve your pain, but not all the way.

This is when you need to consult with a homeopath.

Chronic lower back pain is a problem for millions of people. Pain and discomfort can be debilitating and unfortunately many lower back pain treatment options involve prescription medications with side effects that ultimately replace one problem with another, trading pain relief for a number of various side effects.

Exercise has been greatly recommended as the best treatment option since it promotes natural healing by strengthening the muscles. Doctors, athlete trainers, and physical therapists have proven this to be true but not necessarily guarantee that it will work positively for you as it has for them.

Also, after the advent of computers in our lives, we spent majority of our professional life sitting in front of our desktops and laptops which is also one of the reasons for low back pains because one such incorrect posture is that we do not sit in the right way.

Sit on an exercise ball and keep your feet firmly planted on the floor. Try experimenting further by lifting each leg one at a time until you can manage to get it higher. If you’re in too much pain and feel that exercise can provide you with relief, simply sitting on the ball and keeping yourself balanced can have the benefits that you need.

          ]]>

Acupuncture is another nonconventional method to relieve lower back pain. In acupuncture, a trained professional pierces some points on your skin with miniscule needles. The depth of the needles in awfully shallow and does not cause any pain.

Further research has shown that muscle strains and sprains heal better with movement. Yes, you can overdo activity, so with a sore back, try to move as you would normally, but avoid activity or movements that are painful. This may leave you with very restricted movement for a few days, but the back pain should improve in 2-3 days.

Lie on your stomach with your arms outstretched in front of you and legs behind (like Superman when he’s flying). Now slowly lift your legs and arms off the floor using your back muscles. Keep your legs and arms straight. But don’t do more than your back can take, if you are experiencing back pain currently. But progress slowly. Keep your legs and arms straight, yet off thew floor.

One can also suffer from backache due to a slipped disc. The spine is made of vertebrae which are separated by connective cartilage and fluid to allow free movement. A slipped disc occurs when the soft connective tissue pushes against the spinal nerves leading to severe pain. In some cases treatment of back pain due to a slipped disc may require a surgery.

Once you take a class in Iyengar yoga, you can do most of the postures at home with your own supports. If you’ve been suffering from chronic lower back pain, it’s certainly worth a try. It’s always good to find alternative treatments for chronic lower back pain to help reduce or stop pain medications if you’re taking them and avoid possible dependence or addiction.

Exercises are not complicated and can be done at home. Start of with light exercises, these will probably be painful but will ease as the days go by.

Here are some exercises for strengthening the back by gently stretching the back muscles. Do each of these exercises five times twice daily preferably in the morning and evening. Later on you can increase the repetitions to ten times.

Do each exercise quite slowly and cautiously.

Stop any exercise that causes discomfort, numbness, weakness or some other sensation.

It is always good to do some light aerobic exercise such as brisk walking to warm up the muscles before doing any exercise.

Exercise No.1

1. Lie on your back on a mattress
2. Bend one knee, place your hands upon it and slowly bring it towards your chest.
3. Press your lower back against the floor as you do so.
4. Remain in this position for as much time as you feel comfortable.
5. Come back in the original lying position and relax.
6. Repeat with the other knee.
7. Do the same exercise with both your knees.

          ]]>

Exercise No.2

1. Lie on your back. Keep your arms on sides. Bend your knees while keeping your feet flat on the floor.
2. Place your lower back flat on the floor. As you do so, your hips will rise upwards.
3. Hold on for about 10 seconds and come back to the original position.
4. Slowly increase your holding time to one minute.

Exercise No.3

1. Lie with your back on the floor
2. Fold your arms and place them on your chest.
3. Tuck your chin into chest and raise your pelvis so as that your back lies flat on the floor.
4.

In order to relieve lower back pain, exercises and stretches are an important component of any treatment plan. Certain exercises can also prevent lower back pain, and future injuries from occurring. Patients with lower back pain need to strengthen weak muscles and lengthen tight muscles and fascia in the back. Research has shown that with patients with lower back pain should not perform sit-up exercises because it can put additional stress on the lower back causing more damage. There are three exercises that have shown to reduce lower back pain and strengthen the muscles in your lower back.

The first stretching exercise is called “cat/camel.” To perform this exercise you will start on your hands and knees. Once you are on your hands and knees you will arch your middle back like a cat arching their back and curl your head forward looking down at the ground. Once in the cat position hold this position for a count of five seconds. Next, you are going to flatten your middle back, looking up with your head and arch your lower back like a camel. Once in the camel position hold this position for a count of five seconds. Repeat both motions three times for a total of thirty seconds. Perform this exercise twice per day.

The second strengthening exercise is called “bird dog.” To perform this exercise again you start on your hands and knees. Once you are on your hands and knees, the first step is to tighten your abdominals. To do this suck your navel towards your spine and brace your abdominals as if you were about to get punched in your stomach. You should be able to hold this contracted position and be able to breathe normally. Once your abdominals are tight, then you are going to extend your right arm straight out and at the same time extend your left leg straight out. Your arm and leg should be as straight as possible, all while maintaining a contracted abdominal core. While in this position hold for a count of five seconds and then return to start position. Next you will extend your left arm out straight and extend your right leg straight out. Hold this position for a count of five seconds. Repeat these two positions, six times total.

          ]]>

The third strengthening exercise is called a “side plank.” To perform a side plank you will start out laying on the floor on your right side resting your body weight on your right forearm keeping your torso, pelvis, and legs in a straight line. Next, you are going to suck your navel towards your spine, contracting your abdominals, while still being able to breathe normal. With your abdominals contracted you are going to push up into the plank position resting your body weight on your right forearm and having your torso, pelvis and knees off the ground in a straight position. Your forearm and lower leg and feet should be the only area contacting the ground. Once in the plank position you will hold this position for 30 seconds. Next, switch sides so that you are starting on your left side and repeat the same plank procedure on the left side. Hold this position for 30 seconds. Perform this exercise for a total of two sets on both the right and left sides.

Perform these exercises three to four times per week to help relieve and prevent lower back pain. These exercise not only will help to alleviate and prevent lower back pain but they will also improve your posture and improve your overall health and fitness.

Question by michael scantling: Am i entitled to military disability?
hi, i was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out with this, as im kind of running short on time to get it done. I believe I injured my back while in korea, its well documented that ive had back pain ever since then but could never pinpoint what actually caused it, since I never had any major accident. They’ve put me through just about everything they could since then including multiple temporary profiles, physical therapy and finally they put me on a permanent profile for “chronic back pain” right before I had an MRI, when they finally discovered that I have two herniated disks in my lower back. That was right before I deployed here to Iraq. Im currently stop lossed and returning to the states next month. I will have 60 days left in the army when we return. Im not sure where to start or if I will be entitled to disability.

Answer by Britney
Sounds like you will be entitled to at least 70%. Get the ball rolling on the paperwork!

Question by KP19633: Cramps or Kidney infection?
I am having cramps right now, but my lower back on both sides are also hurting. I was wondering if it is possible my cramps are so bad that they are also in my back, or am I having cramps and a possible Kidney infection? I had a severe urinary track infection in November but it was more like my upper back and when I first went in to my Dr. he wouldn’t take any tests and told me that it was just “back pain” How much back pain could I possibly have at 23? So I had to go to the ER the next day because I was in really bad pain and they actually took tests and that’s how they found out I had an infection. So I want to avoid going to my Dr. Has anyone ever had cramps where it is also in your back?
